In My Living Room
The tv voice from the other room sounds like it's coming from over the phone. The recipe of hears-voice and phone phonics mixes into a pretty convincing feeling that what I'm really hearing is the answering machine. Brain math. Voice + Phone + answering machine.
and i think about the blinking light.
it's red, not that forgiving blue tone some VCRs have.
every time the power goes out, the answering machine goes out, comes back on, and blinks until the message is set again.
I know it's in there blinking right now.
It'll probably still be blinking when you're reading this 'cause I have no intention of doing anything about it. Somehow, this imposed withdrawl from my appliance responsibilities brings me a certain pleasure. A policy of non-interference between me and my animal, vegetable, and mineral house mates is essential.
Laissez-faire ya'll. As long as it helps me screen my calls, the answering machine and I are on fine terms.
just fine.
